Knowing how to sew, does come in handy on more than a few occasions, and this project for our oldest daughter was, well, not common.....

But to me, it's not the dress, but her purity in both heart and soul..........

you see, I wouldn't have picked out that style of dress for her, and probably wouldn't have chosen the lace (I actually tried to convince her otherwise), but her purely sweet demeanor fits this dress (after all said and done) and shows just what an innocent and pure joy she is to me, and I honestly feel honored to have been able to sew her something that does show her inner beauty.....
She doesn't care about fashion........
Her look is her own......for the moment....
Loving things vintage as I do, but unable to find quality dresses in her size, she wanted what she wanted......
and after feeling dizzy looking at all the lush silks and taffeta material, we decided on the blue and white check.......
the compliments she received the first day she wore it into town, were humbling......

I had ladies and gentlemen alike telling me "it's nice to see some femininity......." and "where ever did you find a dress like that.....in France?".....(I blushed at that one)
I am not repeating those things for anything more than to justify the fact that you do not have to follow fashion........but allow yourself to be who you are, and be comfortable in whatever you want to wear......vintage........new.....or hand-sewn..........
my daughter is not used to such compliments, and was rather shying away from the idea of wearing this dress again due to the amount of unwanted attention the dress received......
But to me, it's not the dress, but her purity in both heart and soul..........

She had the ability to teach me, that you have to do just be yourself, whether people like it or not.......to explore your surroundings and notice that how you live, and who you are will show on the outside after you are comfortable on the inside.....
I'm sure you all had a wonderful weekend....

She is so darling...that is not even the word.
ReplyDeleteAs a mother you must find such relief in what she is attracted to- think of all the horrible things on the racks for girls her age today.
I am awed at your skill and your understanding of your children.
My cousin is so beautiful! She is exactly what young girls should be, and you have every right to be extremely proud of her, Aunt.
ReplyDeleteYour daughter couldn't have picked a dress that suited her better. Spectacular images of her peering into the barn. Your photography just gets better and better.
ReplyDeleteYou would have loved the scenery up in Upstate NY with all the farms. We would have had fun taking pictures together.
XO,
Carole
Beautiful dress...even more beautiful daughter. You did a wonderful job, Anne Marie! I wish I could sew like that! A simple apron has me perplexed, and I go over and over the simplest of patterns!
ReplyDeleteAnne Marie,
ReplyDeleteWhat a pleasure it is to meet you. Your comments are so kind, thank you so much for taking time to come by.
I have just spent some time visiting your wonderful blog. You are right about our creeds being the same at heart.
I am going to visit Coty now but look very forward to staying in touch & following you along on your journey.

Ooooh, the finished product...how beautiful! But you are right, Anne Marie, it is the pure soul wearing the dress that makes it so spectacular!!! You never cease to amaze me (or inspire me).
ReplyDeleteI sew very little (simple window treatments, pillows, etc.), but was recently discussing with my mother how I need to take some classes so that I can sew Mary Catherine some clothing.
Such inappropriate outfits out there. In fact, I was appalled at the bathing suit choices this season; the rule at our house is 1-piece only for Mary. Well, surprisingly this was more difficult then it should have been. I finally found some one pieces at Wal-Mart that were splattered with Ariel (The Little Mermaid); not my first choice, but better than 2-piece!
Sorry for the ramblings; fashion for children can be a sore spot for me!
Blessings,
Valerie
Anne Marie,
ReplyDeleteI can't express enough how much I enjoy your blog and your amazing photography. Honestly, it's one of my favorites without a doubt. I haven't been able to visit recently, but it was such a pleasure to catch up with what you, your family and animals have been up to lately. I will be back soon!
