Anthropologie is becoming where style starts and ends for a lot of people........and for good reason!
they seem to have new ideas all the time........of THE most creative kind.........
and I can respect that...........
I go into that store with many new ideas each time...........as do when I take a walk in the prairie........or spend time in quietness with tea and a good book..........or so many fab. blogs........
however..........being a local lover........and a sewer.......I have to wonder about what kind of empire these people are creating "underground"...........stores such as Anthro, Neiman Marcus, and such.........
all Anthropologies clothes are made in China, India, Bangladesh, Mexico but not the United States.
Let's take some linen pieces, since I like to sew with linen..........
no, it's not cheap to purchase linen........but it's worth it when you do........
and when I buy linen......it's made in USA........
i simply cannot do with anything else
Antrho Example #1:
- Button front
- Cotton, linen
- Hand wash
- Imported
style #913929
$78.00
~Anne Marie's take: totally cute.......thin......and well, not pure linen.......but a cotton blend......imported
- Hand wash
- Imported
- Linen, rayon
- Machine wash cold. Made in China.
- 100% Organic Linen/Trim 95% Organic Cotton 5% Spandex.
- R9RI-T1359P $158.00
This one is only $48 on Etsy..........from ObiMama (click on image to purchase)
~Anne Marie's take: nice classic style.........all linen........bravo.
or this one........(also on Etsy)
Details:
-linen/rayon blend
-$206
-click on it to purchase
~Anne Marie's take: totally cool styling, dress, love it!.......but blend......not pure.......but still very very cool.......
WHY did I do this?
Because I'm sewing with linen lately, and I want to make sure I'm not charging too much.......but being able to let my customers afford quality clothing without spending alot.......
A girl has to do her research you know..........
I do have to say, it was REALLY hard to find 100% linen, made in the USA products.....and I am so happy to be a part of a pure linen line of clothing............all made in this country.......by my hands.......
and I'm working on quite a bit of new products for the barn sale......both in linen and a pure cotton that is light.........just in time for summer........and I buy the cotton direct from the manufacturer (obviously, I'm not flying overseas to get it......) P.S.!! if you know of good linen simplier in the states please forward me the info.
all of that will be listed online once the sale is done.........
Hope you are all having a great week.......it's already the middle!! yeah!
p.s. my disclaimer......as I can truly be honest, not all of the items in our household are from USA......mostly because they were from recycled thrift stores, or we just couldn't find made in usa for that item........
i would love to be a purist, yet my pocketbook adjusts to pragmatism
keep us posted dear-ie on all this "crap-ola"... it's a downright shame ...I'll watch for sales on linen over her in the burbs
ReplyDeletethat clip about whole foods revealed the sin of the love of money
I'm amazed at how all the old things in my house were "Made in the USA," but almost nothing new is...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the etsy tip. Pretty things, but the stuff at Anthro is out of my price range!
I love to buy "Made in the USA"... although be it hard to find sometimes. It is great to help the economy and it also is a "proud to be an American" thing for me. I love your blog and the your creations. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGreat and informative post As always Anne Marie ;)
ReplyDeleteI used to get Mary Janes Farm Magazine, but I have found so much more practicle knowledege from my own research and from fellow bloggers like yourself, that I asked my hubby not to renew my subscription this year. Why waste the paper it's printed on. And like most every magazine it's full of advertisements, for like you said, things made in china or elsewhere.
I wish I could say all the things in my house are made in USA and all organic, but like you, most of my things are hand-me-down or thrifted. We have a pretty small budget for luxuries.
Thanks again for bringing this subject to light. I am always learning something when I visit you. Here's to shopping more infomed.
Many Blessings,
Molly
Great post!! I love me some linen and I have to make all of mine too.
ReplyDeleteWe have a great fabric store that carries linen at a semi-reasonable price.
I boycotted Mary janes Farm about 2 years ago when I found out her items were made over seas and she tries to promote "Made in the USA" and "Buy Local". I've washed my hands of her! Sort of double standards??
Your sewing is beautiful!
I'm so glad you have an interest in Made in USA! I wish so much that it wasn't so inexpensive for our companies to have things manufactured overseas. I know they really don't have much choice if they wish to stay in business. But we can do our part...I'm anxious to see what you create! :)

HI
ReplyDeleteAs all of ours do... as a shop owner I have tried to find wonderful little cottage industries that have unique and of course cool stuff. I have traveled and spent my time and money looking these artisans. But I have to tell you that it is getting harder to find! The smaller artists that I have ordered from in the past are now making most of their stuff in China and India. They sell their designs to bigger companies such as Midwest and when I get the merchandise it is all in boxes marked China. Even Cody Foster is now sending his designs overseas.
I try to make a lot of it myself but I can't do it all.
Somewhere there is a happy medium, I am still searching
Blessings
Great post! I always try to buy American , its one reason I love vintage! But as you said its impossible to be a purist.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck with your sale!
Good points...well taken. Funny you should add that you purchase direct from the manufacturer as I was looking for linen at our local fabric store and they had NOTHING. Not a thing. I wept.

Cindy
Perhaps???...I could take a bus to Joy;s for the big sale? Just a thought buzzin' around my hear!
I have the same trouble with finding USA made fabrics for my blocks and such... I love Hobby Lobby, but WHY do they import so much from China? Maybe the Christian heritage of the store doesn't translate to buying American? I don't get it...
ReplyDeleteps. I love linen! I am going to make some pants and I LOVE that blue dress you pictured! I bet I could make that.
Great post. Such great food for thought. I really wish the US had better incentives to do business in the states....!! I love how you ended it - 'love to be a purist but pocketbook adjusts to pragmatism' - I think if we all strive to have that mentality we'd all be more healthy, wealthy and wise!
ReplyDeleteHugs ~
a great post today! i'm so bummed to hear that about mary janes farm. she 'appears' to be so organic/american/cool... should have known. ;)
ReplyDeletelove that you are using your talent to create truely american made products. i think your price should reflect that and i think people are willing to pay more for it. just like buying local vegetables from your farmers market..you always pay a bit more, but so worth it.
can't wait to see your creations!

well said...linen is dreamy, but it is hard to find. there is an online store that has lots and lots of linen and burlap which I love (not for clothes so much) at onlinefabricstore.net but I don't know if it is all usa made or not. hard to find to be sure...I took the handmade pledge and am really trying to buy only handmade and/or local...very hard sometimes though...
ReplyDelete...sadly, you are so right when it comes to imports:( - In this economy, I think more people are looking for value rather than quality. They say to speak with your dollars, but it is such a challenge. Thrifting with a creative eye has helped me put together lovely "Anthropologie" like outfits. I adore your linen apron and could so see it paired up with a pair of jeans and a soft tank, romantic farmhouse wear! xo
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh,
ReplyDeleteI HAVE to have that blue dress! I want to make that - How in the world would baby beginner over here even START a piece like that!
Great post.
Go USA!!!
I had to come back and "re-comment" and say that I love your sense of style...lets see more of those clothes you are making!!
ReplyDeletelove your post, i didn't realize that info about mjf...i won't be renewing my subscription at all... i thought all the stuff promoted was made in usa. sheesh
ReplyDeletelike everyone else, not everything i have is miusa, but i try to buy american when i can

I agree with everything you covered. This has really been a pet peeve of mine. If I can't find made in USA I go to thrift shops to buy the old things that were made in the USA. I get very discouraged that more Americans don't take a stand and just not buy things made in other countries. It used to be so much cheaper buying things from China and so forth but those places are creepy up too and now all our mills are closed! One more thing that bothers me is the artist in our country that sell the rights to big co. that then ship all the work to China.
ReplyDeletekathy
and let us not forget how overpriced that Antro really is. BUT, i get great ideas when I visit...
ReplyDeleteGood post! I tried to buy Elizabeth but she was sold!
I love what you sew. I enjoy your "take" and the love that is transmitted through a piece of fabric.
ReplyDeleteTo me, nearly all the "linen" clothing on the market is tissue thin and poorly made--esp. for the price.
I think a production meeting is in order!!
annie
I think I told you about http://www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?menu=h when we were at Amy's that day of the blogger get-together...
ReplyDeleteI can say their linen is fabulous, and they have mondo info about the historical uses of linen, as well as a blog and so forth. I just don't know where they get their linen. They are based in California.
I don't have issue with things produced in other countries, so long as the workers are paid a fair wage and work in decent conditions. I like to support small biz where ever I find it....there are so many wonderful artists around the globe as well as places like Bead for Life that support local women trying to make a living.
I do get tired of the 'made in china', but methinks there are much more complicated reasonings behind that... our country's insatiable desire to consume drives the mass production of stuff. And the poor of our own nation can't afford organic, local stuff. I won't begrudge someone living below poverty level their Walmart shopping, KWIM?
In a perfect world....:)
I am so tired of flipping everything over or looking on the back of a tag and seeing 'made in China or India'. Dear me, don't we have American's starving for a paycheck? I love to find things made in the USA, but it is rare.
ReplyDeleteYes, not even fabrics are made in the U.S. so no one can claim their item is truly made in the U.S.A.---so sad. Glad to see you are trying to be as 'pure' as you can be in your creativity.

GOODNESS!
Elizabeth is here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you do amazing work my friend this is so gorgeous!!! thank you!!!
I feel like I got the " real deal " considering your post here!
as soon as I have a minute I'm going to photograph e and post pics on my site! I adore this! xo
I need linen for window treatments so I checked at the fabrics-store.com mentioned in cottage instincts above and it is really pretty. I called and was told it is made in russia...looking forward to your next post
ReplyDeleteI'm sticking around here because your ideas are so like mine and I love the way you think..I'm a Wisconsin girl living in California for the last 30 years.. Your items are beautiful and I would love to own something one day. I have a box full of Linen that I have saved from the days I worked as a seamtress doing curtains and slipcovers forMadonna's house in the Hollywood Hills. Very good quality and expensive..These were the leftovers.. Maybe a trade..I'll look through the box and see if there are any pieces big enough(they might just be narrow pieces left) I used quite a bit myself for curtains, shower curtain etc. but there may be some for your headband use etc...I'll keep you posted..Come Visit!!
