work is prayer...

Getting to know me personally, you might think I'm 100% Hungarian......

this isn't true

however

when I was growing up, just steps out the backdoor to my Grandparent's home (which happened to be Hungarian) I most certainly felt like I was 100% Hungarian!!

Every opportunity I had growing up, I would take my little red wagon across our neighbor's wooded backyard to help my 'nagypapa' (Hungarian for 'grandfather') pull weeds in the garden,
pick fresh cantaloupe, and be silent....together....working....

he has told me that he used to be praising God when I was there with him
little did he know that I was thanking God too...for him

he is now 93 years old

and this is his own garden and home

over 30 Hungarian pepper plants alone!!

and he tends them all himself still!at 93!!

and my Grandma, his beloved wife, cooks delicious meals from scratch, at her loving age of 90

I miss them everyday that I can't be with them

if it was up to me, I'd still be taking my little red wagon over to their house every chance I could.......

do you know the reason why he is still as spry and fit?

because he does things for himself

he hasn't lost his independence

Saint Benedict stated "work is prayer"

and the medal I wear around my neck is a Saint Benedict medal, that my dear grandfather gave me when I was young.......and I will always hold true to that belief....

work is prayer

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend........and thank you so much for taking time to read my blog (even though I may ramble at times)

xo+blessings,

  7. You know, your post reminds me of a phrase that Sister Ann Lee, the Shaker leader, used to say "Put your hands to work, and your heart to God." Every time I get to work in my backyard or garden, or any time I am there just sitting I feel closer to God. Some of my best talks have happened while working the garden. :) As always, a pleasure reading your posts.

  11. What a beautiful way to look at work. And what a blessing to still have your grandparents and to be able to learn about your Hungarian heritage from them. My great-grandparents emigrated from Hungary in 1905, but I know very little about their lives.

  12. This is truly beautiful. I lOve your grandparents! I have one grandmother left and she is now 85...she still lives on her own and tends her own veggie gardens(in NE) She is still so healthy and youthful. I miss her. I want to be just like your grandma...still cooking from scratch in my 90's. I also want to be that kind of grandmother to my grandchildren...to teach them in my gardens and kitchen.

  19. I love this post!
I just lost my 97 year old Nanny last year and she too believed that work is prayer.
She always told me to do all that do for the Lord and give him the glory. She too gardened until she left us.It has been such a difficult time for me in my kitchen garden without her.
What a treat...Thank you so much for sharing!
    Have a blessed day

  22. marie, what an inspirational post!!! bless his heart, he looks wonderful. no way he's 93. his garden would be enviable if it weren't so holy and blessed by God.

prayer and praise are two of the best fertilizers for the soul too!

  23. I am so happy that you got to see them!
Isn't it funny - work, toiling against the weeds is the curse but how we can becoming so much closer to God, out there, struggling against nature?
The Bible says, "Do everything you do as unto the Lord."

    So yes, work is prayer.

I want more photos of this garden and orchard!

I think work is my favorite form of prayer. I always have. When I perform my daily tasks is when I am happiest of all. Thank you for putting it into words for me today...now, I go to pray...

One of my closest friends is 100% Hungarian and I always loved visiting in her home, listening to her family speak their native tongue, and enjoying their open arm welcome. I miss those days....thank you for taking me back to some very delightful memories and for sharing yours! :> Your grandfather's garden is absolutely beautiful! Have a wonderful week!
