my dream...

When you stop worrying about other people's thoughts of how you are living, a deeper appreciation for the gifts you are given starts to emerge......

Take for example the degree I studied in college: Environmental Science

At that time, there were only two universities that offered a degree in that area of study...that was just over 10 years ago even...University of Montana, and a minor only at Southern Illinois University.

Being that I was absolutely in love with my best friend, I still pursued that degree....
Contrary to what SIU even wanted, I pursued that dream...
I actually had to talk the Administration Office at SIU into letting me study for Environmental Science as a major...with projection charts and an essay!  My focus was not on engineering, but the social science behind the human relationship and their perceptions of the environment and how I could change the world!!!
Currently, almost every University provides a degree in Environmental Science...it's one of the fastest growing areas of education.

My "plan" was to become a guide for Sierra Club in the mountains - sharing my passion for nature while inspiring others to embrace their passions...their dreams...no matter what other people are telling you.

Dreams are essential to a happy life........

I'm not telling you to go and forget your obligations...believe me when I tell you that my first priority is my vocation as wife...then mother.

but that doesn't make me stop dreaming

who doesn't like that exhilarating feeling of a new idea!! or reading something and saying almost out loud "yes!! I want to do that!!!"

being a dreamer doesn't mean you have your head in the clouds with  your rose colored glasses on...

No one can escape the hardships of life........no one

but why do you see some people succeed? and you don't??
why is it that you work so hard and then your efforts don't get noticed???

First of all know this......
every single thing you do effects others

If you have to lock yourself in your room with that bar of sea-salted chocolate and warm cup of milk at night so you can read your new Joel Salatin book to escape the stress of the day...you are effecting others

When you pick your elderly neighbors apples and share your making of homemade jelly and delicious pie...you are effecting others

As you sit here are read this and wonder what you can do to help others while pursuing your dreams...you are effecting others

Here's a start:
  1. Get a piece of paper (or print out what I have below)
  2. Write down one dream you have always wanted to do
  3. Look at what you wrote
  4. Study what you wrote
  5. Say what you wrote out loud
  6. Start telling other people your dream
  7. Stop any negativity that comes into your thoughts in doubt pursuing that dream
Every action you perform is working toward that dream.

The people who achieve their dreams do not talk negatively or sarcastic, and ruin everyone else's lives in the process...think of what your priorities are, make sure you are fulfilling those...but do not forget your dream.

I may not be an Environmental Scientist like I thought or am a Sierra Club guide in the mountains, but my dream of changing the world is happening....with every word....every thought....every action I do.

here's something for you to print out and use in your pursuit of your dream:

Instead of guiding others in the mountains, I guide at least six others daily to acheive their dreams too

and as far as my husband?? ..he still has dreams...big dreams actually

but together, we are helping persue one another's dreams

peace + blessings,

  2. Hi Anne Marie,
I dreamed a dream once too and God helped me to see that He had a better dream for me. That's what I love about life...the unexpected gifts to make you who you are supposed to be, not who you think you want to be.
    A wonderful post...again :-)
    hugs from here...

  3. Being an environmental scientist IS part of being a hard working mom!...Your story is powerful. God has shown me in so many ways how he is in control. Greater than anything I can dream are His plans for me.

  5. Hi Anne Marie,
I think that your guiding six others towards their dreams was the best dream for you .... you are such a wonderful mother and have a really special partnership with your husband. You are also a great inspiration to others and long may it continue.
Sorry that I have missed some of your posts lately....we seem to have been so busy, helping our children move, decorate and babysit !! Blogging has taken a bit of a back seat.
    Much love. XXXX

  6. it is so refreshing to visit your blog and see my exact thoughts written so beautifully. it makes me feel that i am not a crazy woman! ha!
loved your recent post on moving furniture around. just last night i rearranged my front living room...again! my friends heads spin everytime they come over that i have found yet another way to move my furniture around. and then your post on dreams....aahhh. loved it! my dream is to own my own coffee shop. and people are always saying "so when are you going to open that coffee shop?" i have given myself permission to gradually make this dream come true. what's the hurry after all? and, ahem, do you see these two lovely boys that i am raising? this is my job now. so many seem to want to rush everything.
your blog is always so lovely. thank you always for being an inspiration.

  7. I AGREE, I AGREE, I AGREE.....AMEN. We as mothers can still have dreams and aspirations. I have my own, my husband has his own, then we have the ones we share together as a couple. It keeps you motivated and centered when you have dreams. Sometimes when money is an issue, the library, a friend who knows about the subject you are interested in, a mentor, etc...can suffice in the meantime until that goal or dream is attained.

As mothers, we can get so wrapped up in everyone else that we come last (in the dream dept.) It IS important that we take time for the things that interest us. It helps fuel the passion for everyone else we come in contact with---YOU SAID IT BEST!!!
God Bless, I look forward to your posts.

  8. Wow! Those words sure hit home...you HAVE effected someone by them...and motivated her onwards. I am fairly new at this whole bogging thing... putting myself as well as my thoughts out there. I too have a large family, 4 boys and 1 girl and I have taken very seriously my job as mom, often neglecting my dreams and aspirations. I finally took the leap this past year and have started a business based on my passions and need for a creative outlet. We renovated our historic bank barn and I now have pop up sales where I can highlight antiques, repurposed items that I have made and new items that I select that fit in with the old. I truly am blessed to be able to combine my loves into one venue...my home! Thank you for your inspirational words!

  9. Isn't that true! I have seven blessings but still keep dreaming, talking about my dreams and taking steps that are possible.
We actually fulfilled our first dream of living simply in Vermont working from home. I just prayed and never let the thoughts leave me, I just kept imagining our family doing it.
    Blessings to you,
    Tonya

  10. What a lovely imagine for Dreams. I love riding my bike, especially with my husband. It's what we used to do before we had children and now mostly only happens during vacations. I love how she is gazing off into the landscape. This will be printed out now and hung on my studio wall today...
Your thoughts on our roles as mothers and wives are just on my wavelength right now and very encouraging.
    Thank you! xo Karen

  15. Sometimes we think that we have to go out and change the world, when the world that we most effect is right in our own homes. I so admire how you live your life and the important work of raising children and making a home. It is HARD work, but the most satisfying and wonderful thing you'll ever do! Anne Marie, you are always inspiring! Love, Penny

  17. I love this post. I majored in Wildlife Biology...the only wildlife I see these days it the 3 little boys running wild through my house. But that's OK. I love the knowledge I gained and the dreams I once had of working outdoors. It is all still in me and I'm happy to be able to share my knowledge and love of animals with my children. Maybe through my teachings, I will inspire one of them to someday pursue an outdoor vocation. I would LOVE that!
