Kurt has been around for a little while now
Sir Charles died this winter from natural causes....and well....I miss him
I never thought I'd miss a rooster
now, don't you go thinking I'm making chicken diapers and letting them sleep indoors
(seriously)
but I do miss my Sir Charles....he was so nice and treated 'the girls' nice too....dare I even say "respectable"
Kurt came to us last summer as a chick...Sir Charles raised him like a son....taught him what to do, how to care for the girls and the ins and outs of the farmlife here
some of you might think I'm exaggerating....but truthfully...he really did teach Kurt those things - they do that

he is very protective....and brave
his crow is regal and loud...but I still miss Sir Charles
as long as Kurt keeps the girls out of my mulch in the perennial beds, he'll quickly become my favorite

What a fun post, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! I have always wanted some chickens here at my home and reading this makes me even more. Growing up on our family farm, we always had an assortment of misfit "pets" running around. Once someone dropped off a rooster. He would follow my dad everywhere! It was the cutest thing!

I know how you feel! Three of my girls were fox or coyote taken this last year and I was actually heartbroken over it. They become very much like family.

ReplyDeleteI know how you feel:) I have a rooster that is so wonderful with the girls when they have chicks. He protects everyone in the group. If is going on that he doesn't like he lets us all know about it. They are amazing birds. I can watch them all day:)

ReplyDeleteKurt is very handsome and seems to be quite proud of the job he has inherited. - A week ago today, we lost a brand new rooster that had quickly taken my heart and was a fine leader, to a nasty eagle...I cried and felt broken...I don't make diapers or let them in either, but it still is sad. xo

ReplyDeleteI agree with you- they teach each other things! We have "Big Boy" who is a fantastic rooster- he was actually taught the ropes by an older mama hen, we've lost a couple other roos along the way and I'm thinking we should get another little one so Big Boy can train him... HOW did you train them to stay out of your mulch? :)

Kurt looks to be a fitting successor to Sir Charles Anne Marie. I can see how you must miss Sir Charles....I would be hopeless if I had a farm....I'd be a soggy mess everytime any of the animals died !!

I don't think there are any more beautiful colors than those on your rooster and hens. If I had those beauties, I'd go snap happy with my camera. It must be SO nice living on a farm, Anne Marie!
ReplyDeleteChicken Love, I call it. I have it, too. We are new to chickens, and last year we were forced to find a new home for our Silver Laced Wyandotte, Pepper, who turned out to be a rooster. The neighbors are within earshot, so we kept the 3 hens and found a good home for Pepper. I miss him daily, too. I love hens, but roosters are special birds, so beautiful and such personalities!! If Kurt finds a way to keep the hens out of the mulch, I wish he would share his secret. I also have that problem!

Oh Anne Marie, how I LOVE THIS POST!!!! I am now the proud owner of 4 hens and a rooster whom I call Maxwell. They came to live with me one week ago today, and my life has forever been changed. I adore them and never bore of watching them and hanging out with them. I always knew I wanted chickens but never realized what wonderful little friends they can be. Your Kurt is such a very handsome fella. I would love to hear more chickie love stories, they brighten my day so.

I lost one of my roosters 2 nights ago to a coyote. His name was "Marge". I am sad, but feel a sense of proudness knowing he died doing his job....protecting the girls. It's funny how these little creatures leave such a mark on us. Loved your post today.

So sorry you lost your Sir Charles. But, I know what you mean about a good rooster like him. Perhaps, he taught Kurt to be just as nice. Kurt is awful handsome.
