summer nook...

this table was noticed by me the moment it came out of Amy's car for the barn sale here...

I have to admit, it's kind of nice having a flea market come right to the farm...

the natural wax she put on it prevents it from chipping anymore, and the French hand towel made from flax is what i am using like a little table runner

the "curtain" is just fabric I strung up on a birch branch...just temporarily, to keep the heat out

if it was up to me, I wouldn't have any curtains

ever

but our big windows face the south....the heat pours in....good in winter.....not so good in summer

we don't have air conditioning
by choice, so everything is oriented in the rooms now for best light/views/heat control

this nook is so nice and cool in the crisp mornings, and watching the sunsets at night....

here's a closeup of the fabric...a nubby linen with a faded turquoise stripe

i grew up sailing with my Dad, and those memories are treasured and seem to be creeping out more and more in my sort of  red, white, blue decor

you might already know how much I like Ralph Lauren's style, and seeing he's producing more of his quality goods right her in the USA, makes me like him even more

if only more of the big names did that....think of the jobs!

one of our old corn crib doors fell off awhile ago, and I recently used it for some food styling I was hired for by Jo Packham for a new book she hired me for
(more on that later)

after bringing that in for a few shots, i really enjoyed it inside, and it is now very happy being in our nook

I am adding that same stripe fabric in my living room....not done yet sewing those

shopping at JoAnn Fabrics, at a 50% home decor is not so easy finding USA made fabric, but  you can still find made in USA fabric, such as Waverly

it is a classic rose pattern I have always liked....and am very happy to work with it finally in our farmhouse

there is nothing like classic pattern and texture

there is a road trip I have planned with a good friend this weekend...if you follow me on Pinterest, you can see what's inspiring me in my pinboard entitled "road trip"

I'll be helping decorate a new shop in Indiana, and doing a photoshoot....but more on that later too

  1. I would never hire a decorator, because of money and trust... maybe trust, more than money.
But I can imagine, closing my eyes, and trusting you to do your magic on my home. I think I would be delighted with the results.

  2. Ooohhh...I do love a road trip! ;o) Sounds amazing!

I too, try to seek out things made in the USA. Last year at Kane, a customer purchased a large cabinet from me to use in her store in Bartlett, I believe. Everything she carries is made in the USA. I have yet to make the trip, but I would love to see her shop!

Have a fabulous day, this weather is unreal! We are off to take a little hike in the woods!

  3. We recently moved to a home with a large south facing window and I too am discovering how much it warms up the house. The previous owners had shades and curtains at the window and I've kept the window bare as the view towards the mountain is beautiful. Thank you sooo much for the inspiration!!

    1. I know what you mean Diane...the view is so nice, with the catalpa tree and the sunset, but I have to do something about the heat at that part of the day....I'm thinking of doing a pull up/down shade with that fabric....

and btw, a mountain view sounds AMAZING!!!!!!

  4. What an absolutely beautiful nook! The corn crib door looks perfect there.

I love that fabric by Waverly... I used similar Waverly fabric for my dining room curtains, although the background on mine is blue... the beautiful pattern ended up being one of my favorite parts of the room.

I recently discovered your blog and have enjoyed catching up. It's just beautiful.

  9. I do love that linen with faded turqoise stripes. Your nook is so comfortable for summer's ease. The Waverly rose print is a favorite of mine as well. I have the comforter, sheets, a table runner, and a few gift bags in that same print. It was for our old king size bed. Now we have a queen so it only gets used for picnics and camping. I grew up with no a/c by choice of my parents too. I couldn't do it now because we live in a valley that can reach 110 in summertime and I had a heat stroke when I was 19 that damaged my body's natural way of cooling...so I have to be very careful. I still choose to open and close windows at the proper times that I learned from my mom growing up with no a/c and we do not use ours unless absolutely needed. Same with the heater in winter. I prefer the fireplace and warm blankets over the house heater. Natures ways of remaining cool or warm are best for our health I believe.

    1. that fabric would go so well in your house kerrie...the stripe i mean

110 sounds very hot....and i do not blame you for turning it on

when i am expecting and huge and super hot, the portable window unit goes in for those hot nights....i totally understand, but am so sorry to hear you went through that as a child.... great hearing from you kerrie...hope you are well

  14. Lovely, natural, TRUE, AUTHENTIC as usual Anne Marie.
You are a true person and that is reflected in your way of decorating!
Since I am not able to sew, I particularly appreciate the birch branch idea and the twig that takes the curtain up! Love it!

So much going on there I see, I'm so excited for you, you deserve that all!!!

A kiss and a special hug,
    Fra

  15. No air conditioning? Y'all are brave....we would die here at 116 degrees with no air (or lets just say we would all be on each other's nerves!)

Have a great road trip...I will have to pop on over to Pinterest.

  16. I LOVE THIS NOOK! It is sooo inviting and so CHILL! The perfect spot to cool off with a glass of ginger peach iced tea! I love the sofa...is that really a bed with some throw pillows? Genius! I have another question, how do you keep your home looking so nice with boys living in it? I have one boy and he is like the Tasmanian devil and everything is a mess!! Lovely post, it is inspiring me to consider some re-decorating in my spaces.
