be yourself...be creative (part I)

I had a conversation yesterday with a dear friend....

and what concerned me is that she thinks that being married, with children, that she couldn't
do "the things she wants to do"

she didn't even know what that "thing" was

but like she had lost herself amongst the diapers and laundry

Being that I can relate, she turned to me to seek advice...a shoulder...a friend

I told her "turn off the TV"

it really is that simple

The internet is there, I told her, and at any given time, you can watch your fav. programs or read blogs, etc....

but do it when your husband isn't home and the kids are busy with their activities

Watching TV takes up so much of people's time...energy...brain power....

but most of all:
CREATIVITY

I seriously do not know how I would be able to sew and help my kids do their art and projects and help my son build a castle out of blocks (and so much more) if I watched tv

My basic advice extended into a conversation based on
finding her creativity...

all of us have it.......and none of us are perfect.....but we all have special talents

Be Yourself....Be Creative

  1. This is SO true. I never watch TV during the day...It really does "zap" your mind...you loose yourself in it - All I ever do is CreAtE ! YOu are very kind, Anne Marie.... I always enjoy your posts.

  2. love this.
we'd never get anything accomplished if the tv got turned on before the kids are in bed each night.

even then, there are many nights when we find ourselves reading or talking.....

we have a tv but our family's life isn't centered around it.

  3. my mother saw the wisdom in this advice as we did not even own a tv for most of my childhood. instead i drew, read, played outside and the piano. and watch out for halloween and christmas, we would decorate our rooms to the hilt! my sis loved putting on puppet shows and skits. i know my creativity today stems from my mother's good idea. great post!

  4. I don't know what I would ever get done if the TV was on. It's just never on. I was ill during the beginning of Fall...too tired to even pick up a book, so I stayed in bed and watched TV. I loved it! A little too much. So it stays OFF now!

I hope you are staying warm...it is 12 degrees!

  5. What great advise. I know I watch too much T.V. and it is definitely a creativity squelcher. I have been very interested lately in people who accomplish their dreams and have a zest for life. I haven't been for a visit to your blog for a while and I'm always glad when I stop by because you are truly and inspiration Anne Marie! I leave you feeling uplifted.

  7. Some wonderful advice, Anne Marie! I never watch TV during the day, usually not until around 7-8 at night, when I'm ready to wind down from the day. But, I can relate to your friend feeling like she has lost her "self"... what "she" is all about... what "her" interests are. I was there not long ago, just before I started blogging. In fact, I think that's one of the reasons why I started blogging. Now, I want to start my own etsy shop... eventually. I LOVE your creative spirt and your can-do attitude, Anne Marie!! Thank you for encouraging all of us to do the same!
    xoxo,
    Jo :)

    p.s. Your pictures ae BEAUTIFUL!

  8. The comments regarding TV has resonated with me! Recently, I heard someone say that it is just amusement. If you look at the word "amuse",.. what does that mean? We begin with "a" which in one of it's definitions means "without"; and we have the word "muse" which one of it's definitions is "a source of inspiration". In my mind, it means without inspiration, although my dictionary did not have such a definition for the word,.. This has caused me to look at the way I spend my time. Just a thought...

  9. So well said.Creativity is a beautiful word itself. So many ways to learn from such a word.TV does get in the way of creativity and imagination.especially in the minds of the young.I seen it so often when I was working at the Y back in Il.Turning off the TV is good. You can learn to recreate some time to an be so much fun and you get the creativity back.It can be so much fun and you become to feel better about yourself.. You are a wonderful friend Ann Marie. Friendship is a special gift..I hope your day is warm and cozy..Chickie

  10. Yep. As much as I'd love to watch HGTV...I know I'd plant myself in front of the TV and do little else...so, I don't have TV either. Not the I am Miss GitterDone and paint my house every other week...but it's one less thing to steal my time away! ;}

  12. You are so right, Anne Marie about the tv. We don't have one and haven't missed it. Think of all the great things people could do if they cut out tv time, besides saving monies on cable and such.

  13. Anne-Marie - what a blessing you are to your friend. ♥ You shared some very wise wisdom with her, my dear. Even though I've never been blessed to have my own kids, I do have friends who are moms who say that they MUST take time out during each day for themselves. Just 1/2 hour. It may sound selfish, but they don't feel complete as a woman (which has to come first) unless they do, and motherhood and being a a wife just falls into place after that. I pray that she will find the beautiful God-given creativity that she was born with....♥

  15. Oh, I certainly understand what your friend is saying. That's the way I've felt for a long time and it's the reason I started a blog. I wanted to find my way back to the me I once was...a creative, artistic person. I think I'm getting there. I hope your friend finds what she is looking for :)

  19. Love this post Anne Marie! It's funny, I've never been an anti-tv person but your words made me realize that I haven't watched much tv at all since my daughter was born (wow- almost 7 years ago) but I've been able to accomplish so much. Without the tv on we are free to DO something, be it alone or with our loved ones. My blog has been my creative outlet and I have so many friends who are missing that 'me' time but they just don't know what it is they want to do. Here's to sewing, painting, crafting and creating~the results are much deeper than being surrounded by pretty things. ;)
Your work area (today's post) is so inspirational.
    Hugs~

    It's a good thing!
You sound like such an amazing mom :)
I'm so glad you like the idea of the chandi in the mudroom :)

  24. That's wonderful advice, Anne Marie. TV truly sucks the creativity and life out of a person. Poor programming and negative news... I love my computer where I have so many blogs to read.
