cucumbers and sailboats...

the heat makes us pick super early in the morning and late at night

as soon as they come in, they get washed and kept in the cellar,
while we wash and prepare the jars and lids

the next morning, it's time to dice/slice and start the brine

we went a bit "overboard" with planting cucumbers we enjoyed them so much while gazing out at the frozen tundra during the harsh winter

since we went overboard, we are able to share so much with friends and family....and I'm so glad

the garden is doing quite well considering the heat
and due to planting so close together in most places, I am able to not weed so much
(imagine that)

so I did some more sewing using a striped sheet and appliqued a sailboat on it for our daughter

I didn't perfectly line the stripes up....without a care I made this skirt......

she doesn't mind and neither do I

we had lost power from a terribly windy storm...the weather up here is quite peculiar lately
and I almost caved and got an air conditioner
almost

but once again, we chose not to
it's almost a game now....letting it cool off inside the house and run around and closing the windows at just the right time....funny really.....but with heavy drapes and quick feet, we are able to keep this old farmhouse cool enough....but we aren't using the oven, instead the grill and the side burner outdoors which I am hysterically calling my 'outdoor kitchen'.....someday.....someday!

I am however, taking a break from pickles, and am blending and juicing them galore
quite versatile

anyone know of uses for cucumbers?  I would love to hear how you use them in and out of the kitchen

  1. Oh my goodness!
That is a lot of cucumber plants...
got me thinking I should add to our few, if I am really thinking of trying our hand at pickles, too.
Since I am still in the phase of *daring myself,* do you have a pickle recipe or tips you would care to share, please?
Sailing away in a long cool skirt... lovely!

  4. I thrifted that exact same sheet, and plan on making my kidlets some summer pajamas. With baby due anytime now, maybe I should get on that... What a lot of cucumbers! We still have lots of relish and pickles left from last year, so I only put in 2 plants this year, just for eating. I'm not a big fan of cucumbers, but I do love them sliced on a cracker with cream cheese and a sprinkle of lemon pepper, it makes a delicious lunch on a hot day!
Hope you get a little relief from the heat (it was 88* here at 10:30 am (two states to the east of you) this morning!)

  5. a kitchen window open and a country curtain blowing in the soft summertime breeze beckons me inside.

Don't you think it makes us appreciate the gift of a summertime breeze when we work around the heat of the day to open and close windows to keep our homes comfortable? I enjoyed reading this bit from you and how you work around the heat in order to manage your home.

Yes indeed you did plant a lot of cucumbers, but you are being productive with them. Your photos are green and welcoming of summer gardening at it's peak.

Stitches of a colorful boat on a cheery summertime skirt are enough to make my heart skip a beat. My goodness it's just perfect.

As for all those cukes. you seem to be doing a fine job of putting up. we enjoy them raw, on sandwiches, with humus and mixed with a little sugar and vinegar for a special summer treat.

    happy pickling!

  6. Your cucumbers look wonderful... ours suffered so much from the heat that they are just now starting to pick up a little. I love making pickles with cucumbers to enjoy all year long... they are just delicious added to a chicken or macaroni salad.

Your pictures are so pretty... love the window open with the floral curtain.

  7. I love cucumbers, too. This is very simple, but cucumbers sliced and mixed in a bowl with sour cream is so good and so refreshing on a hot day.

  8. My favorite thing in the world is cucumber sandwiches on homemade bread. and then there's cucumber, tomato, onion, dill and macaroni (cooled) salad. I just add a large spoonful of mayo and the family can't get enough of it : )
We have had some hot, hot, hot temps here too Ann Marie. Today it's 94, and that is so rare for the mountains. I image my daughter in Boise is baking. I hope we all get a break in the weather soon. I'm an eighties girl myself.
    hugs from here...

  12. Oh my!
I did not know you suffered of those terrible pain when you expected Daniel... that must have been awful Anne Marie... :-(((

Look at the quantity of cucumbers you have planted!Ah ah!!!That's not a garden, that's a plantation!! LOL!!! I see your cucumbers are not climbing...we have them climbing on a wire netting....
Oh well, I do not know what you could do with them if not pickles... we eat them fresh with some oil, salt, vinegar and black pepper as a salad but I suppose you do that already...

    Pickled blessings to you all!!
