  1. Hi, Anne-Marie.

I am a lurker here. I read your blog every day and find much that encourages me and inspires me.

Now I should like to return the favour. :)

I read a LOT! And I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I love to read "old" books: The Clowns of God by Morris L West is an old favourite; In This House of Brede by Rumer Godden is one I return to about once a year or so; The Shape of Illusion by William E Barrett stuns me every time.

For non-fiction (and a different POV) I am currently reading The Lost Gospel of Mary by Frederica Matthewes-Green. She is the wife of an Eastern Orthodox priest. This book is about the Mother of Jesus in three Ancient Texts. Those would be the Gospel of Mary, written about 150AD, a Prayer to Mary, from Egypt, written in the 3rdC, and an Eastern Orthodox poem to Mary, written in Syria in the 6thC. The last poem is still sung to Mary today throughout Orthodox churches. It is giving me a greater appreciation of Mary's humility in her chosen-ness. Awesome.

ANy of these books can be found at Amazon or Alibris. I hope this helps!

    Blessings to you and yours...

    Laura.

  13. Hi, Anne Marie! I just finished a great book called The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. It has everything...history, romance, mystery, even fairy tales...woven together into a great story.
Other favorites of mine include The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery (who also wrote Anne of Green Gables), Homecoming by Rosamund Pilcher and The Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter. Let me know if you try any of them!

  14. Herm, have you read "Green Dolphin Street", by Elizabeth Goudge? Or "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte? Probably the last one. "Child from the Sea", also by Elizabeth Goudge, is beautiful but very sad.
    There's my suggestions. ;-)

  16. This is funny......while I was just sitting here in my office awaiting my pictures to download for my blog I was staring up at my bookshelf looking at all my "has to be good reads" wondering when I would ever have time to get to read any of these. Then I see your post!

It has been so long since I have read a good book that I wouldn't even know what to recommend at this point. Sorry. Good Luck!

I don't read much fiction anymore, but when I did Lori Wick was a fave! My daughter loves the Mitford series by Jan Karon.

  20. You could try Ahab's WIfe (or the Stargazer). It's a veritable TOME but Sena Jetter Naslund tells a story like no other author I have found since. And Marie Antoinette - another of her novels is nearly as amazing. The Elegance of the Hedgehog was amazing in French, not sure how well it translates but your other friend could tell you that. I am being attacked by stink beetles (the joys of living in the country ;-) so I guess I had better get to bed to MY book! More on a spiritual bent ...

  21. Hi Anne Marie,
Seems I'm stalking your blog tonight! ;o) But since I was never able to give you my 2 cents worth on good books & since I see you like historical fiction....YOU MUST run right out & get this book......."These is my words" by Nancy Turner. It is the best. It's about a pioneer girl & her family moving across the country and her coming of age...falling in love...tragedy...happiness & everything in between & not necessarily in that order! It is just so good. You'll laugh & cry all the way through.

(I got mine for about 3.00 on amazon.com)

    Shellagh
