my roots are strong there in both faith and heritage........
with each generation, the recipes DO NOT change, but rather, get passed down, like the fine heirlooms they are......
meet my Hungarian great-grandmother.......the first woman from the "old country" to come to America, and sell her organic vegetables from the back of her pickup truck at church....
I admire her strength.......in both her strong hands and heart........and her son, my dear grandfather is just as dear and just as strong.......(and just as good of a gardener...)
our family (me that is) still uses the same beet seeds from her........ truly an organic heirloom........
(pictured above on the right and my other Hungarian Great-Grandmother on the left - and the skinny English G-grandmother in the middle!)
both my Hungarian grandparents tell me how much I remind them of her......they say : "if it was up to her she would have had every blade of grass a flower"
it was a compliment to me....and as far as the looks go, I have been known to wear a babushka many a time........(you be the judge)
(these are just a few)
I'm even passing it down already to my kids!......good gravy!!
One time........I was shopping with my babushka on........and I ran into one of my old teacher's from grade school......we talked awhile.......she was surprised that I had 3 children (at that time).......she ended up going to the bank where my mom worked and asked my mom "really....how is Anne Marie?" my mother asked "why ever do you ask that? she is fine as far as I know".......and my old teacher then replied in solemn tone, "well.....I just meant with the cancer and all......and all those kids.......she seemed so well".....smirking my mother said: "oh! you mean Anne Marie had her head scarf on eh?........that's what she calls fashion."
no wonder people open doors for me more often when I wear my babushka!!
~have a fantastic weekend everyone~
Adorable story.....love your babushka!!
ReplyDelete..."That's what she calls fashion."
ReplyDeleteOK, THAT was hilarious.
I wear "hankies" in my hair, red ones, like my Gramma, a farmers wife would wear to keep the grain dust out of her hair
...your's are way chic-er.
Dear Anne Marie, Do you speak Hungarian? I love your blog and pics and the feeling what you give us.
ReplyDeleteLots of love: Anka from Hungary
p.s: I love babushka, and we (my daughter and me) wear several times.
You and your family wear them well! Some people can wear them well...and you definately have that sylish flair and wearing them makes you unique and you!
ReplyDeleteSweet post...love your babushka look. I wish I could do it...I always look strange with things on my head. Happy weekend!

So funny!!!! I LOVE your babushka! It brings back such memories!!!
ReplyDeleteI wear a babushka when I am working in the gardens...keeps my hair out of my face and off my neck! Stylish is the last word I would use to describe me on those days!
ReplyDeleteYou, on the other hand, wear a babushka very well!
I love your spice racks... where did you get them from?
ReplyDeleteAunt Jemima doesn't hold a candle to you!
ReplyDeleteMy mother used to cook a lot of things with a dash of paprika. She was from Prussia and as a teenager in the sixties I used to wear babushkas and I thought I was quite stylish. Love your old photos.
ReplyDeleteHi Anne Marie,
ReplyDeleteI love the photographs of your Great Grandmothers.
They look such strong women who , I think, may have had a hard life.
I think that you have inherited the strong qualities from them.
I do like the story of your teacher and your babushka. She was obviously worried about you !!
Have a lovely Sunday, Anne Marie.
Oh, and I think that you look lovely in your babushka. You have to have a really pretty face to be able to wear a scarf like that and you have. You wear it very well. XXXX
I love the babushkas too!!
ReplyDeleteI often wear a common bandana on my head when I am working in the garden or painting or such. My daughter told my bosses children one time when they were with them on a play date, that I always wore a bandana on my head when I was tidying up the house!! He said his little girls thought that was so neat that they started wearing one every day!!! LOL!!! We have laughed for 25 years about that one!!
Yes you do make it very fashionable!!
How cool that you're connected in so many ways to your heritage.
ReplyDeleteHaha! You look geat in your babushka! I like to wear them around too! :)
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!
I like the babushkas you wear. ANd I like to hear about your family. I wear scarfs in my hair because it is so long and it helps to keep it from getting tangled and dirty when I am working in the garden. I never knew what a babushka was. My mom used to call me "her little babushka" when I was a girl. I thought it was a term of endearment. too funny. I wonder if my mom even knew what she ment. It sounds cute though. ;)
